RAMBU SOLO’ DAN PERUBAHAN ADAT MANTUNU TEDONG: SUATU KAJIAN SOSIAL BUDAYA

The mantunu tedong tradition, which forms an integral part of the Rambu Solo’ funeral ceremony, holds a significant role within the customary practices of the Torajan community. This study aims to explore the underlying motivations driving the social shifts observed in the implementation of this tradition. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and local residents in Lembang Tampan Bonga. The findings reveal that social motivations such as the desire to uphold siri’ (personal and familial honor), maintain social status, and avoid public shame are the primary factors influencing the transformation of the mantunu tedong practice. As a result, the motivation to preserve the tradition has increasingly shifted away from its original spiritual foundations toward more contextual social and economic dimensions. While the tradition continues to be practiced, its meaning has gradually evolved in response to changing social dynamics and contemporary societal pressures.
