Abstract

This study aims to examine the meaning of work from a religious perspective among Christian farmers in North Toraja through a sociological approach to religion. Specifically, this study examines how Christian values influence work ethic, social solidarity, and ecological awareness in farming practices. This research is significant because it offers new insights into work not merely as an economic activity but as an expression of faith and culture. The methodology employed is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation in several villages in North Toraja, with primary informants being active Christian farmers engaged in agricultural activities. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation in several villages in North Toraja, with Christian farmers who are actively engaged in agricultural activities as the main informants. The results of the study revealed four main findings: (1) work is understood as a calling of faith and a form of worship to God; (2) religious values such as honesty and patience are the driving force behind the work ethic; (3) collective work practices reflect social solidarity based on the teachings of love; and (4) farmers' work reflects ecological awareness and respect for cultural heritage and God's creation. This study concludes that work in the context of Toraja Christian farmers is not merely an economic activity but also a spiritual, social, and ecological act. These findings enrich the study of the sociology of religion by emphasizing the importance of faith values in shaping sustainable and meaningful work practices.
