Abstract

This study aims to analyze parenting styles and the preservation of tabe’ cultural values among early childhood children in Borong Baji Neighborhood, Takalar Regency. This research employed a qualitative approach using a phenomenological method. Data were collected through field studies using unstructured interviews. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive qualitative analysis, while data validity was ensured through source triangulation and technique triangulation. The informants in this study consisted of five parents of Makassar ethnicity who have early childhood children. The findings indicate that the parenting styles applied by parents vary, namely democratic and authoritarian parenting. Democratic parenting tends to be more effective in instilling cultural values because it involves children in decision-making processes and emphasizes two-way communication, whereas authoritarian parenting demands absolute obedience and provides limited opportunities for children to express their opinions. The implementation of tabe’ culture within the family instills the values of sipakatau (humanizing others) and sipakalebbi’ or sipakalabbiri’ (mutual respect) in children. This study implies that parents need to be more reflective and wise in applying parenting styles while preserving local cultural values as the foundation for character building and the development of politeness in early childhood.
