Abstract

This study examines the efforts of visually impaired married couples in forming a sakinah (harmonious) family from the perspective of Islamic law in Makassar City. It employs a field research method using normative-sharīʿa and sociological approaches. The findings indicate that Makassar City has 90 Special Schools (SLB) with a total of 4,109 students with disabilities. One institution observed in this study is the Yayasan Usaha Karya Tunanetra Indonesia (YUKARTUNI), located in Manggala District, Tamangapa Subdistrict, which has approximately 50 students, consisting of 46 visually impaired individuals, 3 hearing-impaired individuals, and 6 individuals with intellectual disabilities. Among them, 8 individuals are recorded as married. Visually impaired couples strive to form a sakinah family by adhering to religious values in daily life, fulfilling economic needs through independent activities such as small-scale trading and working as itinerant massage therapists, mutually understanding each other’s limitations, prioritizing education, and resolving family issues through deliberation (musyawarah). Mutual support and cooperation are key factors in achieving a sakinah family.
